Professional Recognition Award - Criteria

The Hospital Libraries Section (HLS) Professional Recognition Committee is seeking nominations for awards to outstanding HLS members. Individuals who have contributed to the field of hospital librarianship may be nominated in the following categories:

Leadership:

Evaluation Criteria
  • How is the nominee an advocate for hospital librarianship?
  • How has the nominee improved or benefitted our profession?
  • How has this nominee tried to change entrenched ideas that hinder our profession?
  • How does this nominee generate and sustain trust?
  • How does this nominee demonstrate leadership?
  • Has this nominee been professionally involved as a leader in national, regional, state, or local activities? If so, what activities?
Publication:

Evaluation Criteria
  • Where was the publication published? In a health-related, library, refereed, indexed or abstracted journal?
  • What is the coverage of the publication? National, regional, state, local?
  • Was the subject matter of the publication of relevance to hospital libraries/librarianship?
  • Will the publication contribute to the enhancement of hospital librarianship?
  • How many times has the publication been cited in the literature? In what journals?
Research:

Evaluation Criteria
  • Is the nominee's research medical library oriented?
  • How is the nominee's research activity relevant to the expanding role of medical librarianship?
  • What is the impact of the research on hospital libraries or librarians?
  • What are the implications for the library community?
  • Has the research been published? If so, where?
  • Has the research been presented at a professional meeting? If so, where? At a national, regional, state, or local meeting?
Technological Innovation:
Evaluation Criteria
  • How has the nominee demonstrated innovative utilization of new technology to provide library services and/or resources?
  • Did the use of new technologies enable the nominee to advance the provision of medical information in the local library community in a significant way?
  • Were new patron groups reached for the first time?
  • Were new services provided for the first time?
  • Does the technological innovation have application to other library settings or to the profession as a whole?
  • Has the technological innovation enabled the library to be networked or integrated more directly with the patron population, other libraries, and/or the patent institution?
  • Has the innovation expanded the role of the library and its mission within the community it serves?
  • Has the nominee presented or shared the innovative use of technology with others in presentations, papers, workshops, etc?
